Carver Magnet High School, known for its academic success is one of the top ranking schools in the Aldine Independent School District. Unfortunately, like any other school we have our academic problems, but with the support of our staff and the determination of the students here in their eagerness to succeed we hope to improve the ability that sits heavy on some student’s shoulders; this ability is known as reading. How many times have you or another student has been asked to read an excerpt from a book but stumbled over the words, or pronounced them incorrectly, maybe even sounded them out slowly because your reading skills or not as strong as they should be? How did it make you feel? Angry? Embarrassed? Stupid? These setbacks may have even encouraged you to avoid reading all together. It is important for you to know that your staff has not forgotten about you in fact, what if instead of avoiding reading there was a way to make yourself a stronger reader?
More directly, Ms. Amine, head of the Language Arts Department has not forgotten and has in fact requested the Journalism team to help spread the word. Not by assigning you a book to read and a reading assignment but by recommending liberal works of art and motivating you to read books that act upon your own personal interest.
