Swimming While Drowning

On the evening of October 11, 2018, a few members of Carver’s Troupe #6753 went on a field trip to see a 2 man play called Swimming While Drowning by Emilio Rodriquez at Stages Repertory Theatre. As Emilio states, “Angelo and Mila are fifteen and homeless. Angelo is a dreamer, Mila is a street-wise hustler, but when they become roommates at a shelter for LGBTQ teens, they build a fragile bond that inspires them to reach for understanding and self acceptance.” The play was a very sentimental piece to watch. It shows the harsh trials that young LGBTQ teens have to overcome on today’s society. The statistics were overwhelming: According to Williams Institute, 40% of the homeless youth served by agencies, 43% of clients served by drop-in centers, 30% of street outreach clients and 30% of clients utilizing housing programs identified as LGBT. If you think about it, when you see a child walking down the street you assume they’re on their way home. But in reality, they probably don’t have a home to go to and that’s something that us humans of today have to realize and fix.
